Katie's quote for the day:
Spring Break!!!
03.24.05 (7:38 pm)   [edit]
I am so happy :) Spring Break has finally arrived. Wow, time really does fly by. I can't say school has been all that "fun". But then again, college is about taking the word fun out of most peoples vocabulary. Luckily that hasn't happened to me. Although I did feel completely overwhelmed with some of my clases (I still do). But I have made it this far, so not everything has been bad...

My professors are really cool, they have been extremely patient with me, and are very helpful with any questions or problems I might have. The Lord has been so good to me in providing everything that I need. I have a job, it's pretty nice, I go to this family's house and teach their kids Spanish. The kids are wild, and are usually bouncing off the walls, so that isn't always the nicest, but I am learning a lot about life, and that is really helpful.

So, you might be wondering what I am doing over Spring Break... Well, my boyfriend Luis is coming to pick me up on Saturday, I am planning on going to NJ for a week. I also have some dentist appointments in NYC scheduled for that week. I can't wait to see him, he is so nice, and means the world to me. I wish we could be closer.

Not much else has been going on. I went to the circus today with my family. We had a great time, it was at the MCI Center in DC. There were tons of cool things. I wish I had 6 eyes, then I could've seen it all. I am really tired, I think I am gonna call it a day. Take care everyone...

hey hey
01.22.05 (5:26 pm)   [edit]

Hey everyone... Wow, I dunno where to start. So much has been going on in my life lately it's amazing how much everything has changed. I got back from Chile on the 17th after spending Christmas and New Years with my family. The weather was beautiful down there, nice and sunny.

The first day here in the states was exhausting, my body was in shock, I went to the part to play soccer and almost froze to death. Plus I had to go to the ortho and get my braces tightened. I woke up early Tuesday morning, my eyes were bloodshot, I could hardly open them. And I had to drive to my first day of classes at a local Bible college. I got so stressed out cause I have been homeschooled my entire life and I am not sure what I was expecting, but after reading the syllabuses I felt overwhelmed. All these term papers and projects that I have to start working on. I know it's gonna be a lot of work and I really have to get started on a good study schedule or else I will never make it... Well I have to go start reading(Basic Theology by Charles Ryrie).

roller coaster
10.03.04 (10:14 pm)   [edit]

My life has been like a roller coaster lately. I got to the states in August after being down in the southern Chile islands for almost two weeks.

The surgery was a huge success, the dentist in NYC treated me so well, I didn't know how to express my gratitude. I had no swelling, bruising or bleeding which was kinda surprising. I can only say that there were so many people praying for and the Lord really used that time to work in my life. One of my dearest chilean friends(Daggi) was able to accompany me to the states and we really had a great time, my mom also came. I wasn't planning on staying permanently in the states right now, but I guess the Lord had different plans for me.

The time that we were in NJ was great. My dad has been friends with a pastor of a hispanic church there for years and he has always attended their pastors conferences, so we sort of knew the people we would be staying with. I have to admit I never thought I would have such a great time there. They treated us so well, the church provided us with a house to live in and different families in the church prepared meals for us.

One of the greatest parts of the time there was meeting the Santos family, they are such neat and fun loving people, I felt right at home with them. We did a lot of things together and our time there just flew by. I wish we could have stayed there longer. Luis is the oldest of the kids, he is 25 years old and one of the coolest guys I know, he is so sweet and we have become really really good friends, there is so much more I could say about him, but I think now is not the time.

I am in Ohio at my grandparents, but I am planning on going to DC in a little over a week to start working and living over there. Some awesome people in the church here gave me a car, the Lord has really blessed me so much. I plan on writing more later, thank you all for your prayers and support.

~Katie~

PS. I miss my fam so much it ain't even funny.

Still Alive
07.13.04 (8:47 am)   [edit]
Winter vacations started yesterday and so did the Bible Club which we are planning on having this whole week. Yesterday 28 kids attended, we had a really nice time, I had to lead all the songs, and also do the games. It went really well, and I was amazed at how well all the kids listened and did the activities. Hopefully more kids will come out today even though it's pouring outside.

Shoot, I have to go help my mom with luch... Ohh yeah, that reminds me! I am working on an awesome site that I should be able to have up in about a month. It's going to be about cooking and international recipes, and I am going to try to have a monthly newsletter and maybe a book drawing and other cool things that like. I will let you all know. Blessings, and I plan on writing more later.

thankful
07.08.04 (11:36 am)   [edit]
For all of you people out there who have teeth be thankful!! I have a strange problem that only happens like once in a million people. I am missing 13 adult teeth! I still have seven baby teeth in my mouth right now, and there are no teeth to come in... So my parents always joked around that I just need to marry a multimillionarie and then I could get teeth implants(haha, what a lame joke).

Last year I did this online search and I found this awesome dentist in NYC, he was really friendly and really wanted to help me out. He asked me to send him some pictures, x-rays and also molds of my teeth so that he could kinda study and look into my problem. Well, after that I didn't hear from him for a while so I thought, yeah, this guy probably thinks it's too complicated and is just gonna forget about it. I wrote to him, and thanked him for all his helped, I told him that if he didn't think he could help anymore there was no problem... What do you know?? He wrote back and said that he was getting together with his surgeon and they were going to talk about my case. The next day I got an email that said: GOOD NEWS, and when I opened it he said that they were going to take on my case for FREE!!! I was so excited I couldn't believe it. We are still going to have to pay for the materials and lab costs which is like $4,000 dollars, but he said my mouth would normally cost $25,000. I am so thankful for the way the Lord answers prayers.

I was going to have the surgery in August of last year, but my brothers orthodontist said that I should have everything straightened out as much as possible before the surgery, cause the implants are permanent. So the ortho here in Chile said since the guy in the states is doing it for free he was going to help me out for free also!!! I am just amazed at how God works everything out.

I am having the surgery this August, and I am going to try to write a story for some magazines (maybe RD) cause I would like the dentist Dr. Glassman www.glassmandentalcare.com to get more publicity, he totally deserves it. Does anyone know of anywhere where I could send in my story? I think it should be heard cause we need to remember that there are still people out there who are good and who want to help others... Once again everyone, be thankful for the teeth you have and take good care of them :D

address
07.05.04 (6:40 pm)   [edit]
Hey everyone, here is my chilean address and also our mission's address in FL. For Chile it's better to send packages that weigh less than a kilo.

Katie Harbaugh
Casilla 1461- Correo 3
Rancagua, Chile
Sud America

Katie Harbaugh
Gospel Mission of South America
1401 SW. 21st Avenue
Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312

By sending it to FL, it will be sure to get to Chile, but it might take some time. It depends when a short termer or some other missionary is coming down and have room in their luggage to bring it. If you send to Chile it will make it, it might take a little while and if it's big we have to pay duty on it. So you can decide how you want to send it. I just think it's really thoughtful of you all to offer to send a few things, not many people think about us...

PS. I promise to send chilean postcards and I will try to find some light souvenirs so that you can all have something to remember Chile by...

07.05.04 (3:25 pm)   [edit]

I hope I didn't sound like I was complaining in my last blogs, I LOVE CHILE :) hehe, it's just complicated to explain. I really appreciate all of you who have offered to send stuff, that is so sweet!! My dad says it's better if the things are sent to our missions home address in Ft. Lauderdale, FL because of the complications getting them through customs. BUT, if you send a package that is about three pounds max there shouldn't any problem getting it through...

Karate is calling my name, I will write the addresses when I get back. Blessings, KT

hey
07.05.04 (3:16 pm)   [edit]
A little late to be writing about the 4th of July, but I want to tell you all how my day was... Went to church in the morning, had a bunch of new people out which is really exciting to see, because it means our church is slowly but surely growing.

We had been praying for a lady(62) in our church who was a bit sick in the clinic, and after getting home from church we found out she had passed away. It was a bit of a shock, in the afternoon we went out to the neighborhood around our church giving out invitations for kids to come to our Winter Bible Club, which starts next Monday.

Then after that we headed to the funeral place, where people stay all night near the body... I have never been to a funeral in the states so I am not sure how they do it there. But we(my family and other folks from the church) sang a ton of hymns and choruses and my dad taught from the Bible. It was really heartbreaking for me to see all the people who are so lost without God. Most of the lady's family are either communist or very catholic. The saddest part was that I was in the same funeral home where I had been a few years before when one of my friends had committed suicide, and I was remembering all that, same place of the casket and everything. I am so glad that the lady from our church had wanted a closed casket, cause most people here in Chile have the casket open, and it's almost offensive if you don't walk to it and look at the person. After being there a couple hours we headed home... The fourth of July had ended.

This morning my parents kept on trying to wake me up, I was so exhausted, but we had to go to the funeral home and then the cementary. Everyone was crying and I couldn't help shedding a few more tears, more for the people there, cause I know our sister is in heaven.

I didn't mean to have a bad attitude about the whole situation, but sometimes I wonder why I have to live all this stuff. I was reminded over and over of the verse in Ecclesiastes 7:2 which says: "It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart." I really was praying that the Lord would forgive me for not being in my happiest mood, but sometimes I think he wants to teach us something so he puts us in certain difficult situations.

it's me
07.03.04 (1:38 pm)   [edit]
I still have a bit of a cold, but I am getting better, just trying to exercise a ton and drink lots of OJ :? I guess by living here in Chile I am kinda disconnected with a lot of stuff that goes on in the states. For example, I keep forgetting that tomorrow is the 4th of July, and my uncle is getting married next week and I can't even be there with everyone.

Sometimes I miss just being in the states a messing around with my friends there. It's not like I don't love Chile, it's just that sometimes it's tough when there are so many differences with the two cultures.

My dad really doesn't want me to get my driver's license cause people are such crazy driver's here so I'm 19 and I CAN'T DRIVE! They wouldn't accept my homeschool studies, and to get your license you have to have an 8th grade certificate. So I took a bunch of exams at a local school and got the certificate, now I have to go take the driver's test and I know that my dad would rather I take a micro(bus) or a colectivo(taxi but you pay one fare and it goes a certain route) to go anywhere.

I don't have a job here cause minimum wage is less than a dollar an hour, and my dad says he would rather I work for him than for anyone here. Almost everyone takes advantage of their workers down here, it's really sad.

A few things I wish Chile had:
Public Libraries
Drinking fountains
Blueberries
Peanut Butter(they have tiny containers but they are outrageously expensive)
Reese's PB cups(there are tons of other candy bars that they don't sell either)
Chocolate chips(they finally got Hersheys chips but they cost 6 bucks a bag)
Rootbeer, Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew, Cherry Coke, Cream Soda, Grape Crush, GATORADE
I could name a bunch of other foods like milkshakes and salad dressing, but I don't want this to sound like I'm a junk food junkie

friends
07.01.04 (7:24 pm)   [edit]
I have a cold right now, my head feels like it's going to explode. But I can still find a little time to get on here and write a blog(I think I am getting addicted, hehe), and read a bunch of new blogs.

I am reading a really good book and I want to share a little with all of you. Hope you are all encouraged by it.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good," Ps. 34:8

We do not know another person's real quality till we have "tasted" the experience of friendship. Friends are, so to speak, communicating flavors to each other all the time, by sharing their attitudes both toward each other (think of people in love) and toward everything else that is of common concern. As they thus open their hearts to each other by what they say and do, each "tastes" the quality of the other, for sorrow or for joy. They have identified themselves with, and so are personally and emotionally in, each other's concerns. They feel for each other, as well as thinking of each other. This is an essential aspect of the knowledge which friends have of each other; and the same applies to the Christian's knowledge of God, which is itself a relationship between friends. (Taken from the book "Knowing God" by J.I. Packer).

awesome...
06.30.04 (7:52 pm)   [edit]
Our God is an awesome God! I love that song.

I never imagined that I would meet so many cool and interesting people through tblog, this is really neat.

Being a MK(missionary kid) can be tough sometimes, especially when you have to move a lot and travel so much. I consider it a privilege living in a foreign country, and learning about a whole new different culture. Sometimes it's hard with keeping friends cause you miss out on so many things. For example my "best friend" from Ohio, Rachael, she is really cool, but we have missed a huge part of eachothers lives, and we have become really distant, it's sad, but I guess that's how life is. I also have cousins who I see every five years and you would never guess we were even related.

There is a difference in the mentality of the people also. When I go to the states the first few days could be considered "culture shock". It's not so bad for me cause I adapt really well to any situation, but I have other mk friends who have a really hard time getting ajusted to a new place.

I live in a pretty modern city, we have all the facilities, but a few times a year I like to go down to the southern Chiloe Islands(33 islands). It's really beautiful down there, but people still don't have running water or electricity. When I go down there I help people pick potatoes(tough work), collect luga(a type of seaweed), fish with 100 meter nets(totally cool) and even bail hay... If I didn't have my cell phone I would be totally disconnected with the outer world. I just found a site that offers a map of the islands down there click here
-- I usually go to ACHAO where I have friends and then from there I go on a boat to MEULIN. You guys, the view is spectacular, I can't describe it with words, you just have to come see it, it's beautiful. But NOT always, rain is very common there. I have been really lucky to almost always get good weather. I might have a few days with rain, but no thunderstorms. Ohh and the stars, I saw so many shooting starts.

Well, I hope you didn't get bored reading this. As you can tell I really love Chile and I am going to miss the people, but I know that the Lord is leading me to the states...

kickin butts
06.29.04 (8:30 pm)   [edit]
So I write this really nice long blog, click publish, and what do you know?? The whole thing just disappeared, so now I have to rewrite everything, I should always copy what I write just in case.

I got home from karate a little bit ago, I'm so sore. But hey, it's great to be learning self-defense, someday I might have to kick your butt :)

I went to visit my friend Steffy (from Swirtzerland) today, she is so sweet. We were talking about the EuroCup and I really want Czech Republic to win but she is hoping Greece wins... It's gonna be a tough game, but Baros can score a few more goals! On Thursday we shall see who wins. Ohh yeah she told me she is pregnant!! I AM SO EXCITED, the due date is in Dec. I just hope I'm still here in Chile.

Well, I just got home from bowling a little bit ago  I like bowling, but in Chile it's a bit different, people just walk up and take your ball without even asking!!!!!! I was really annoyed. I saw so many people fall down, they didn't know that you aren't supposed to step in the lane, hahaha CRAZY... But hey, at least they have a bowling alley now!! For a city of almost 400,000 they could have more than 12 lanes.

Para mis amigos que hablan español voy a tener otro weblog para que puedan leer ahi todas las copuchas, ok?? www.aboveall.tblog.com

Hey, if anyone ever wants to come down to Chile just let me know. I can make arrangementes, I know tons of cool people, interesting places, and you would really be able to enjoy your time here 8)

Cool
06.27.04 (4:44 pm)   [edit]
Hey everyone, this is my first weblog of many more to come!! I am currently living in Chile, I could almost be considered a chilean cause I have lived here more than 11 years. My parents are missionaries. I was born in Ohio. The problem with weblogs is that I have to write them in two languages or else my other friends feel left out.

Asique para mis amigos que hablan español, este es mi nuevo weblog, espero escribir mucho para que ustedes no se aburran y puedan tambien comentar y dar sus opiniones.

Chao for now...
